At Regency Security, we have around 1,600 door supervisors out working hard every week, both men and women of all different ages. This month we’ve spoken to Michelle to ask about her story and experience of working in the security industry.
So, Michelle, tell us a little about yourself?
Hi, I’m Michelle I’ve worked as a Door Supervisor at Regency Security for over five years. I currently work in the Essex area.
I’ve worked in a lot of different places in the past, from finance to working as a waitress and I’ll be honest none of them really floated my boat.
How did you get into the security industry?
There wasn’t a big trigger in my life that led me towards working in security. But, I’d been interested in the industry for a while, mainly from speaking to door staff when I’d been out in town.
So one day, I found myself a course to become a qualified door supervisor and as they say, the rest is history.
Training does sound boring, but honestly I enjoyed the course. You learnt something new every day and since then I’ve been on a lot of other training sessions to help me in my job.
The number of women working in security are increasing, but do you have any words of advice to someone interested but not sure if it’s for them?
There can be a negative perception around being a Door Supervisor, especially as a woman. A lot of people say to me I could never do that, I’m not strong enough. But I always tell them this job isn’t about being strong, it’s about talking to people. Nine times out of ten, we use conversation to diffuse a situation. If you enjoy talking to people, then this might just be the job for you.
As for it being a male orientated industry, it doesn’t have to be. I’ve found working at Regency on the doors is like having another family. I tend to work in the same places and you end up developing a good bond with the other members of the team and even with regular customers.
So, when you’re not looking after the doors, what do you do?
When I’m not working I enjoy the simple things in life, walking my dog and hanging out with my friends. What more could a woman want.
